SYBA Youth Umpire Program

Shakopee online baseball registration will start in late January and run until early February.  If you are interesting in umpiring for the 2010 in-house season, please indicate your interest when registering online.  If you have interest following registration, please contact the Youth Umpire Coordinators directly.

League Objectives:

Shakopee youth umpires are needed to run an effective in-house program.  We believe the experience will deepen the baseball experience for SYBA baseball players. The Youth Umpire program objectives are:

  • provide a setting for youths to serve as a role model for the younger players
  • provide an opportunity to serve their community
  • deepen their knowledge of baseball
  • provide a sense of responsibility and accomplishment (as for most of the participants this will be their first paid job)

 Requirements:

1.      This program is for youths 13 to 18 years old who have prior experience playing in Youth Baseball.

2.      All participants must attend a training sessions run by a certified umpire designated by the SYBA Board.

Training Protocol:

After a youth has contacted the SYBA Umpire Coordinator(s) and has expressed interest in participating in program the following will occur:

Training times will be set with a designated professional umpire and candidate must attend all trainings. (Training typically includes one Saturday.)

After initial training is complete, the youth umpire will be assigned a scrimmage to umpire under the supervision of a professional umpire. This is part of the training procedure and the youth umpire will not be monetarily compensated.

The professional umpire will provide feedback regarding training candidate to the umpire coordinator.

Once complete, the youth will be eligible to umpire games for the league.  Youth umpires will be assigned to SYBA in-house baseball games for Little League, Rookie League, Minor League, and Valley League (grades 3rd - 7th) and be compensated $25 per game. Number of games will be determined by the Youth Umpires availability, number of youth umpires, and reliability (umpires missing scheduled games without coverage may be removed from the schedule).  There is a bonus program for umpires with perfect attendance (a minimum of 6 games is required).
